When Are You Eligible for Canceled Flight Compensation?

Flight cancellation doesn’t automatically mean your flight compensation claim is valid. Your eligibility largely depends on three factors:

1

When Were You Notified?

If you learned about the cancellation less than 14 days before departure, you may have a valid claim.

2

Were You Offered Another Flight?

It matters whether the airline offered you another flight and how much your arrival time changed.

3

Why Was Your Flight Canceled?

The cancellation must be the airline’s fault. In extraordinary circumstances, such as severe weather, compensation may not be paid.

Your route and the applicable regulations also matter.

Your options

Compensation, a Refund, or Alternative Flight?

If your flight is canceled, you may be entitled to fixed compensation. You may also have the right to choose between a ticket refund and alternative travel arrangements:

Cash Compensation

An additional payment you may receive if you meet the eligibility requirements.

Ticket Refund

You’re allowed to request a refund for your ticket if you no longer wish to continue your trip.

Alternative Flight

You can choose to board another flight to your destination, subject to the applicable rules.

!

If the airline didn’t offer another flight and you had to buy replacement tickets yourself, you may be able to claim reimbursement for that additional expense. You may also be entitled to canceled flight compensation even if you accepted an alternative flight or other benefits from the airline. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Does the 14-Day Cancellation Notice Matter?

If the airline notified you of the cancellation at least 14 days before departure, you generally aren’t entitled to fixed compensation. If you received the notice later, your eligibility depends on whether the airline offered alternative flights, when those flights were scheduled, and how much your arrival time changed if you accepted one.

Can I Receive Both a Refund and Compensation?

Yes. A ticket refund and fixed compensation are separate rights. In some cases, you may be entitled to both.

Can I Claim Compensation for a Flight Canceled Due to Bad Weather?

Severe weather conditions may qualify as an extraordinary circumstance, so an airline may not be held accountable for payable compensation. However, the airline must substantiate the reason for the cancellation and show credible proof that it took all reasonable measures to prevent the cancellation despite the circumstances.
